Disney+ Hostar will follow Netflix’s lead and stop users from sharing their passwords with anybody outside their house. The major streaming service recently informed Canadian subscribers of changes to its subscriber agreement through email. The company stated in the email that it is updating its policy and introducing new terms, including the enforcement of restrictions on account sharing for users starting November 1.
Disney pointed out in the mail that it will enforce strict rules against the practice of sharing accounts, despite the fact that it has yet to provide more details about how it intends to implement its policy on password crackdowns. “We’re implementing restrictions on your ability to share your account or login credentials outside of your household,” reads the extract of the email shared by The Verge.
Disney even updated its help center which specifies, “You may not share your subscription outside of your household.”
Disney+ Hotstar will track users
The question is, though, how Disney will know whether users are sharing passwords, and what will happen if they do?
Well, the company mentions that it will keep an eye on becoming subscriber accounts in the newly updated section of the Canadian subscriber agreement called “Account Sharing.” The account will either be limited or terminated entirely if any violations of the policy are found.
“Unless otherwise permitted by your Service Tier, you may not share your subscription outside of your household …If we determine that you have violated this Agreement, we may limit or terminate access to the Service and/or take any other steps as permitted by this Agreement” reads the agreement.
All these changes will take effect across Canada starting from November 1st, “for whom the updated Subscriber Agreement will be effective on their next billing date, on or after November 1st, 2023.”

Disney+ is starting to crack down on password sharing in Canada, but the company is also expected to roll out the new guidelines in other countries, including India.
Netflix also stopped password sharing
It’s interesting to note that the new Disney+ Hotstar terms and conditions line up with the company’s plans to launch its new ad-supported membership. Disney’s efforts to block password sharing and roll out new ad-supported plans, however, appear to be following Netflix’s strategies.
In a few regions, Netflix began cracking down on password sharing earlier this year. To let users know about the changes to its policies, Netflix sent them emails. In a blog post, Netflix stated: “A Netflix account is for use by one household. Everyone living in that household can use Netflix wherever they are – at home, on the go, on holiday – and take advantage of new features like Transfer Profile and Manage Access and Devices.
