In the future, WhatsApp plans to start using usernames in place of phone numbers. This means that users will be able to choose a unique username for their account, instead of using their phone number. The username will be utilized for identifying the user from other users in the app. By doing this, users will be able to find each other easier and use WhatsApp without sharing away their phone numbers

“After installing the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.11.15 update from the Google Play Store, we spotted a significant feature during our usual exploration of the new build,” WABetaInfo said in its report.

According to a screenshot posted by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is actively trying to add a username function to the app settings. Users can access this feature by navigating to the WhatsApp Settings menu and selecting the Profile option.

Users can stop identifying themselves as contacts merely by their phone numbers by selecting a username. Instead, they will have the choice to designate a distinctive and easily recognizable username.

The report says that users of WhatsApp may soon be able to start conversations with others only by typing their preferred username into the chat box, without the need to know their phone numbers.

Although the specifics of how WhatsApp’s usernames will function are still unknown, it is expected that conversations initiated through usernames will continue to be protected by the app’s robust end-to-end encryption. This ensures that user privacy and data security remain given the highest priority.

Beta testers will soon have the chance to test out the functionality, even though it is still under development.

In related news, the group settings section for the instant messaging app is getting a new look. Some beta testers currently have access to the feature.

The new UI is reportedly more understandable and clear. Toggling the switch now allows you to enable or deactivate an option right from the screen, saving you time from having to open an additional window every time an option is selected.

Whatapp’s commitment to innovation and user-centric improvements remains evident with these upcoming features. The introduction of usernames and enhanced group settings interface are poised to enhance user convenience, privacy, and overall satisfaction with the messaging platform.
