What is ChatGPT? What Does It Work?

OpenAI created ChatGPT, an AI chatbot made public in November 2022. It is based on OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 fundamental large language models and has been fine-tuned using both supervised and reinforcement learning techniques.

It allows you to have human-like conversations and can answer questions and assist you with tasks, such as composing emails, essays, and code.

Usage is currently open to the public free of charge because ChatGPT is in its research and feedback-collection phase. A paid subscription version called ChatGPT Plus launched at the beginning of February.

OpenAI is also responsible for creating DALL-E-2, a popular AI art generator, and Whisper, an automatic speech recognition system.

The investigation by the Swiss bank UBS indicates that ChatGPT is the app with the greatest rate of growth. Only two months after its introduction, the report predicts that ChatGPT had 100 million active users in January. Comparatively, TikTok reached 100 million users in nine months.

How to Use ChatGPT?

You can access ChatGPT simply by visiting chat.openai.com and creating an OpenAI account.

You can also still use the old URL for the chatbot, which is chat.openai.com/chat. OpenAI simplified the original URL for user convenience.

With ChatGPT, you may start chatting right away after logging in. Ask a question to start the conversation. You can use ChatGPT for free and as many times as you’d like because it’s still in the research stage.

The Cost of ChatGPT

ChatGPT is free to use, regardless of what you use it for including writing, coding, and much more.

There is a subscription option that users can take advantage of that costs $20/month. The paid subscription model guarantees users extra perks such as general access even at capacity, and faster response times.

However, the free version is still a solid option as it has mostly the same technical abilities, with the exception of access to the latest version of the AI, known as GPT-4, which the subscription model guarantees.

How is ChatGPT Implemented?

The Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (GPT), a language model architecture developed by OpenAI, powers ChatGPT. According to OpenAI, the exact GPT used by ChatGPT is customised from a model in the GPT-3.5 series.

However, ChatGPT Plus subscribers get access to ChatGPT using GPT-4, Open AI’s advanced model. Generative AI models of this type are trained on vast amounts of information from the internet, including websites, books, news articles, and more.

The language model was fine-tuned using supervised learning as well as reinforcement learning. The use of Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) is what makes ChatGPT especially unique. Through RLHF, human AI trainers provided the model with conversations in which they played both parts, the user and AI assistants, according to OpenAI.

Difference Between ChatGPT and a Search Engine

A language model called ChatGPT was developed to communicate with the user. To assist users in finding the information they are looking for, search engines index web pages on the internet. The option to conduct an internet search is not available in ChatGPT. It generates a response using the knowledge it acquired from training data, leaving space for error.

Another significant distinction is that ChatGPT only has access to data through 2021, but Google or other conventional search engines have access to the most recent data. As a result, ChatGPT would be unable to respond to your query about the 2022 World Cup winner, but Google would.

Limitations of ChatGPT

Although ChatGPT appears to be quite remarkable, it still has limitations. These restrictions include the inability to respond to questions that are phrased in a particular way since it necessitates rephrasing in order to comprehend the input question.

A more significant drawback is the poor quality of the responses it provides, which occasionally sound reasonable but are overly vague or lengthy.

When you ask an ambiguous question, the model will simply guess what it means, which may result in results that aren’t what you intended. StackOverflow, a site for developer questions and answers, has already briefly banned ChatGPT-generated answers due to this constraint.

The fact that ChatGPT’s data is restricted till 2021 is another important restriction. The chatbot is unaware of current news or events that have happened since then. As a result, some prompts—like “Who won the World Cup in 2022?”—will produce no results.

Finally, ChatGPT doesn’t provide any sources in its answers.

Is It Possible to Chat with ChatGPT?

Although some people are using ChatGPT for some elaborate functions, such as writing code or even malware, you can use ChatGPT for more mundane activities like having a friendly conversation.

Some conversation starters could be as simple as, “I am hungry, what food should I get?” or as elaborate as, “What do you think happens in the afterlife?” Either way, ChatGPT is sure to have an answer for you.
